Benjamin Howell ALCM, LLCM

Benjamin’s interest in music began at an early age from learning to play the organ, trumpet and piano. His reading of music developed through playing the church organ for services from the age of 13. He was educated in Norfolk and as a child took grades on piano (ABRSM), organ (LCM) and trumpet (ABRSM).

In his late teens, Benjamin’s love of music lead him to tour the world as musical director, pianist and keyboard player, with experience that includes working on board cruise ships, a vast array of musicals, pantomimes and UK theatre productions. In 2005 Benjamin worked as musical director and keyboard player in the UK tour with Boldean Productions, in the critically acclaimed theatre show ‘The Johnny Cash Story’, with musician and entertainer Roger Dean.

Since touring, Benjamin has built a career as a successful piano, trumpet and music teacher and he now works in many schools and music organisations in Norfolk. One of Benjamin’s current roles is Lead Teacher of Peripatetic Music at Alderman Peel High School.

Before the pandemic, he would combine his love of teaching with travel. Benjamin has travelled to countries in need of volunteer teachers. Places include Knysna in South Africa (August 2017), Sing Buri, Thailand (August 2018) and Madurai in India (August 2019) to volunteer as an English teacher and passing on his passion for music on other continents. In November 2018, he trained to become a TEFL** teacher.

On a local level, Benjamin collaborates with fellow musician and teacher, Matthew Preston as part of ‘The Missing Coda’, with the aim of encouraging students to pursue music in schools.

During the National Lockdowns, The Missing Coda created and published a variety of resources for students and teachers to encourage ‘The Whole Musician’.

Recently, Benjamin has trained to become an FA Referee for football games across Norfolk.
